From Flour-Dusted Counters to a Cottage Bakery Dream
How it Started, Where It’s Going, and All the Things in Between
Hey friends,
I can’t believe I’m actually writing this—my first blog post for Sweet & Savory Cottage Bakery! Whether you’ve followed my journey from the beginning or you’ve just discovered this little corner of the internet, I’m so glad you’re here. I wanted to start this blog by sharing how this all began, the heart behind the bakery, and what you can expect as we grow together.
How It Started
Sweet & Savory Cottage Bakery wasn’t built in a commercial kitchen or born from a business plan. It started in my own home—messy counters, noisy kids, a golden retriever underfoot, and the smell of something good in the oven. As a mom of four, life is full (and loud!), and baking quickly became my creative outlet and my reset button.
What began with making fresh bread, cookies, and birthday cakes for my family slowly turned into friends asking for “just a dozen” or “one of those things you made the other day.” Before I knew it, I had repeat requests, a full calendar, and the wild idea that maybe, just maybe, I could turn this into something more.
The Journey
Running a home bakery from our little homestead in Glen Rock, PA has been both beautiful and challenging. I’ve learned to scale up recipes, navigate cottage food laws, and balance the business side of things while still being present for my family.
There have been early mornings, late nights, failed experiments, and some serious self-doubt. But through it all, the support from this amazing community—and the joy I feel when someone lights up over something I baked—has kept me going.
We’ve installed a new oven, adjusted routines, and transformed part of our home into a fully licensed cottage bakery. I still do it all from scratch, with real ingredients and even more love.
All the Things
This bakery is more than just baked goods—it’s a piece of my heart. It’s for the moms who are doing all the things, who want to bring something homemade to the table but don’t always have the time. It’s for the families celebrating milestones, and the neighbors who just need a little pick-me-up on a rainy day.
When I’m not baking, you’ll find me chasing my kids to sports games, working in the garden, visiting local wineries and breweries with my husband, or planning our next family adventure. Life is busy, full, and often a little messy—but I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
What You’ll Find Here
This blog will be a mix of behind-the-scenes peeks, seasonal menus, baking tips, family moments, small business lessons, and probably a few honest reflections on motherhood and homesteading life. My hope is that it feels like a chat over coffee with a friend—warm, real, and maybe a little flour-dusted.
Thanks for being part of this journey. Truly. Whether you’re a longtime customer or just getting to know me, I’m so happy you’re here. Here’s to good food, full hearts, and the adventure ahead.
With love and butter,
Dawn
