A Day in the Life at Sweet & Savory Cottage Bakery

Baking, Motherhood, and Managing the Mess in Between

Hi again, friends!

After sharing the story of how Sweet & Savory Cottage Bakery got started, I thought it would be fun (and maybe a little chaotic) to bring you into what a typical day looks like for me. Spoiler alert: it’s not perfect. It’s real life—with flour everywhere, kids yelling for snacks, and timers going off in the middle of everything.

Here’s a little peek behind the scenes.

Early Mornings & Strong Coffee

Most days start before the sun’s up. The house is quiet—for about 10 minutes—and I use that time to prep dough, check orders, and sip a strong cup of coffee (okay, maybe two). It’s my favorite part of the day: peaceful, focused, and full of potential. That calm usually ends when the kids start waking up.

Once breakfast is going and school prep begins, I’m juggling mom mode and bakery mode. Sometimes that means kneading dough with one hand and helping with homework with the other.

Baking Between the Moments

After the morning rush, I head back into the kitchen. Depending on the day, I’m prepping bread, decorating cakes, packaging orders, or cleaning up the aftermath of the last round of baking. I try to plan baking around my kids’ needs and our family rhythm—but let’s be real, it doesn’t always go to plan.

On baking days, the kitchen smells amazing and looks like a flour tornado hit it. I’m constantly rotating trays, checking notes, and singing along to something in the background (usually 90s country or a good podcast).

Life Outside the Kitchen

When I’m not baking, I’m out in the garden, running errands, picking kids up from practice, or sneaking in a walk with the dogs. We love visiting local breweries and wineries when we can—those little breaks help fuel creativity and keep me grounded.

Family dinners, quick cleanup, and bedtime routines round out the evenings. If I’m lucky, I might get a few quiet moments at night to brainstorm new menu ideas, write a blog post (hi!), or scroll through Pinterest for inspiration.

The Real Heart of It

It’s busy. It’s messy. And some days I question my sanity. But I also get to do something I love while staying connected to my home and my family—and that makes it worth every burned batch and late-night clean-up.

I see you, fellow busy moms. You’re doing a lot—and whether you bake from scratch or pick up something special from me, I’m cheering you on.

Thanks for being here with me in this season. I’ll be back soon with more stories, some of my favorite recipes, and maybe even a behind-the-scenes look at how I prep for a market or event.

Until then—breathe deep, eat something sweet, and know you’re not alone in the beautiful chaos.

With gratitude,
Dawn
